Student Checklist

Incoming students have many things to do to prepare for the first day of classes at Georgia State. These checklists can help students be more organized and make sure that everything is completed before attending orientation, during the orientation day and after leaving orientation.

Before Attending Orientation
Students should:

  • Register for math and chemistry Placement Exams, if required, through PAWS and complete them before* the scheduled orientation day.
  • Register for orientation through PAWS. Since there are a limited number of spaces each day, students should register themselves and their guests as soon as possible.
    • Mail the registration form as soon as possible if they are unable to pay by credit or debit card online.
    • If necessary, change their orientation date at least three full business days prior to the previously scheduled date. They should not select the withdraw button on PAWS. Register for a new date. Register for a new date.
  • Print copies of the registration page and payment confirmation email to bring to orientation .
  • Make travel and overnight accommodations as necessary.
  • Contact Disability Services in advance if they have any permanent or temporary disabilities or needs which may require advance arrangements for assistance. To ensure services will be available, contact Disability Services at least two weeks before their orientation date. Please note: New Student Orientation and Disability Services are not able to provide a wheelchair or other medical equipment.
  • Contact New Student Orientation at least two weeks in advance for any special dietary needs. New Student Orientation can accommodate special meals for dairy free and gluten free diets only. All meals will include a vegetarian option.
  • Submit final transcripts to Admissions.
  • Submit their Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Examination scores to Admissions.
  • Make sure all financial aid forms are complete and submitted including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
  • Activate their campus ID and email address. Students who have problems with their activation should call the Help Desk at 404-413-HELP (4357).
  • Go to Campus Services with a government issued ID to get their PantherCard.
  • Check their PAWS account for any holds on their account. If possible, take the necessary steps to remove the holds before they arrive to orientation. Holds may prevent or seriously delay their ability to register for classes at orientation. Common holds include:
    • Balance due: Charges may be for tuition, housing or any other fees.
    • Emergency contact information: Simply update the required information to release the hold.
    • Immunization: Submit their immunization records as soon as possible, although attending orientation and registering for classes will be allowed prior to submission of their immunization record.
    • Online pre-orientation (for transfers only) must be completed in order to register for classes.
  • Make arrangements with University Housing if they are planning to live on campus.
  • Review class schedule offerings and Freshman Learning Communities. Discuss academic plans with their parents.
  • Before using the Student Recreation Center, complete the liability waiver.

*Students attending Freshman Overnight will take the math and chemistry placement exams during orientation and do not need to complete the exams before their scheduled orientation day. However, students attending Freshman Overnight still need to register for required exams in advance.

What to Bring
New Student Orientation will provide a book bag, pen and all other materials needed throughout the orientation day. Here is a list of things students should bring:

  • Comfortable shoes for the campus tour and moving about the buildings.
  • Layered clothing for indoor and outdoor temperatures.
  • An umbrella if the forecast is calling for rain.
  • Printed copies of the orientation registration confirmation and payment confirmation email.
  • Panther ID number, campus ID and password.
  • Copies of transcripts and any financial aid information received prior to orientation.
  • A photo identification card such as a driver's license, government issued ID or passport. These may be needed to remove a Lawful Presence Hold. A PantherCard will not be issued without this identification. The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia requires all students applying to Georgia State University to provide verification of their lawful presence in the United States before their admission to the university can be finalized.
  • Money to pay for parking: $7.00 in M Deck.

While Attending
Students will:

  • Meet fellow classmates, new student orientation leaders, faculty and staff.
  • Take a campus tour.
  • Get all their questions about Georgia State programs and services answered.
  • Meet with financial aid representatives to discuss any questions about their account.
  • Find a club or organization to join once they arrive on campus.
  • Register for classes.
  • Get their PantherCard.
  • Receive a copy of the First-Year Book and Student Handbook.
  • Complete an orientation evaluation.

After Attending
Students should:

  • Turn in immunization records (if they have not yet done so).
  • Make sure their tuition and fees are paid in full by payment deadline.
  • Have conversations with their parents about:
    • Campus safety and awareness
    • Accident and emergency situations
    • Academic expectations
    • Getting involved on campus
    • Time management and fiscal responsibility
    • Living on campus or commuting
  • Read the First-Year Book.
  • Order books for classes through the University Bookstore.
  • Register their vehicle through ParkingWeb.
  • Register their PIN account and choose clubs to join.
  • Sign up for PantherAlert, Georgia State's emergency text messaging system.
  • Link their Georgia State PantherMail student email account to an account that they check regularly (such as gmail or hotmail).
  • Plan to attend Freshman Convocation in August.

Students attending the Freshman Overnight will need to bring an overnight bag with any essential items. Don't forget to pack the following:

  • Towel
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, soap)
  • Bedding materials (XL Twin sheets, pillow, blanket)
  • Flip flops or shower shoes
  • Alarm Clock
  • Pajamas
  • Change of clothes for the following day
