ACADEMIIC SUPPORT
You’ve got a lot to think about before attending New Student Orientation. To stay organized and limit your stress, we encourage you to review the pre-orientation information in this section. At orientation, you’ll get a book bag, pen and all other materials you’ll need throughout the day. You, your parents, family or any other guests should review the Student Checklist and Parent Checklist to make sure you’ve done everything required before orientation.
Academic Advisement
All students attending orientation will receive academic advisement from representatives of the University Advisement Center. Academic advisement will give students a chance to learn about the curriculum for their degree program and how to plan their first semester schedule.
Students who do not attend orientation and are freshman or transfer students with less than 90 credit hours need to contact the University Advisement Center and make an appointment to see an adviser. Freshmen who do not attend orientation will be required to register for GSU 1010 as part of their first semester course schedule.
For more information, visit the University Advisement Center located at 25 Park Place, or call 404-413-2630 (sophomores and juniors) or 404-413-2300 (freshmen).
Freshman Learning Communities
At orientation, freshmen students will have an opportunity to sign up for Freshman Learning Communities. Freshman Learning Communities (FLCs) involve pre-planned schedules of courses that group students with other students with similar interests. FLCs offer first year students an opportunity to connect with Georgia State University and each other during the fall semester. Through their involvement in an FLC, students form a small, friendly community within a large, research university.
Each FLC falls under one of the eight fields of interest (business, education, health sciences, humanities, policy studies, social sciences and undeclared) and is composed of four or five courses from the core curriculum, plus the GSU 1010 New Student Orientation course that serves as the foundation for the development of strong academic skills.
While FLCs are loosely organized around colleges, students do not have to declare a major in order to register for an FLC. If at the end of the first semester a student decides to select a major in a different area, the courses will count as part of the general education requirements.
FLCs offer the following:
-
- Smooth transition from high school to university life and culture.
- Immediate connection to other students, faculty, campus and Atlanta communities.
- Introduction to university resources and services.
- Higher success rates in GPA, retention and time to graduation.
- Exposure to a wide variety of academic themes.
For more information, go to Freshman Learning Communities.
Immunization
Proof of immunization is an important step to completing the enrollment process.
For all students attending Georgia State for the first time, the immunization requirements have been revised by the Board of Regents to include measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), tetanus and diphtheria, varicella (chickenpox) and hepatitis B (in addition to the meningitis law affecting students who reside in University Housing). For more information, see the Georgia State University Student Health Clinic. Students will be able to register for classes at orientation even if immunization documentation has not been received by the Student Health Clinic.
Unless immunization records are submitted to the Student Health Clinic (not to Admissions) before the first day of classes, holds will be placed on student accounts to prevent registration beginning the day after the end of late registration until the requirements are satisfied. For questions, please contact the immunization office at 404-413-1930, or visit the Student Health Clinic for a blank certificate of immunization.
Online Pre-Orientation for Transfers
Georgia State has designed a mandatory online pre-orientation to help transfer students understand more about Georgia State policies and procedures. This online pre-orientation should be completed before attending orientation.
Transfer students who do not complete the pre-orientation program before attending orientation will not be able to register for classes until they fulfill the requirement.
Complete the online pre-orientation now. For help accessing the pre-orientation program, contact the Help Desk at 404-413-4357.
